From September 22 to 24, 2025, Tournons La Page (TLP) held its General Assembly in Dakar, bringing together representatives from around fifteen countries in Africa and Europe. This meeting confirmed the vitality of our movement and the strength of a universal civic commitment to democracy.

 

A new Board of Directors and renewed Executive Committee

 

At the conclusion of the sessions, a new Board of Directors, composed of around twenty members, was established. A seven-member Executive Committee was also elected to represent TLP and carry forward its actions:

 

• President: Elias BEHANZIN (Benin)
• First Vice-President: Demba KARYOM (Chad)
• Second Vice-President: Malango MAGANGA (Malawi)
• Treasurer: Jaly BADIANE (Senegal)
• Deputy Treasurer: Layibé TOURDJOUMANE (Chad)
• Secretary-General: Christophe COURTIN (Europe)
• Deputy Secretary-General: Sentiment ONDO (Gabon)

This renewal reflects the diversity and representativeness of the movement, which remains deeply rooted in African realities while benefiting from international alliances and solidarity.

 

Three strategic priorities to resist and build

 

The delegates gathered in Dakar adopted a 2026–2028 action plan, structured around three main pillars:

 

• Civic mobilization: Amplify grassroots initiatives, strengthen civil society organization, and fight the monopolization of power.
• School of democracy: Create a training and knowledge-sharing space for activists and social movements to strengthen capacities and resist democratic backsliding.
• Protection and governance: Defend threatened civic space, protect those who engage for democracy, and promote inclusive, transparent governance that respects human rights.

Solidarity with those who pay the highest price

 

Our General Assembly reaffirmed its solidarity with our members who are victims of repression and injustice, and calls for their immediate and unconditional release. We specifically recall:

• Mamadou Billo BAH and Oumar SYLLA, also known as Foniké Menguè, victims of enforced disappearance in Guinea;
• Abdoul-Fadel OUATTARA, also known as Prince Fadel, and Honoré Sitsopé SOKPOR, also known as Affectio, arbitrarily detained in Togo.

 

A clear message: democracy is not negotiable

 

By renewing its leadership and affirming its priorities, Tournons La Page upholds a strong conviction:

"Our future cannot be confiscated by authoritarian regimes or by constitutions tailor-made for them. Democracy is not negotiable: it must be defended, protected, and lived every day."
