Jean-Rémy Yama - president of Dynamique unitaire, Gabon's largest trade union coalition, and a member of Tournons La Page - has been arbitrarily detained since 2 March for alleged breach of trust. However, no Gabonese court has ruled against Jean-Rémy Yama, so he is presumed innocent. The next presidential election will be held in a year's time. The outgoing president, Ali Bongo - in power since October 2009 - has announced that he will stand for a third term in 2023. Since 2016, Tournons La Page and its Gabonese partners have been working to promote democratic change in Gabon. Jean-Rémy Yama is being targeted for his trade union involvement. The proof: he was granted provisional release on 10 June 2022. However, the Public Prosecutor, André Patrick Roponat, ignored this decision and Jean-Rémy Yama is still in prison. Tournons La Page, via the emergency fund of the Protection programme, is supporting Jean-Rémy Yama's lawyers and family. But his health is deteriorating rapidly and he needs urgent hospital treatment.
