Karim TONKO, a member of TLP-Niger, was arrested for ‘organising and taking part in a banned demonstration, complicity in violence, assault and destruction of property’ in Niamey and sent to Say prison. After several postponements of the trial, he was released on 5 October 2018 after the judge ruled that the charges had not been established. The prosecutor then appealed against the decision. To date, after three postponements, the trial has not yet been held at the Court of Appeal. Under article 100 of the Criminal Code, he faces ‘two to six months' imprisonment and a fine of 50,000 to 300,000 francs, or one of these two penalties only’ (around €75 to €450).
