2018: His wife was arrested and tortured by the military forces of the regime in power in Togo. As a result of the inhuman and degrading treatment inflicted upon her while she was approximately five (05) months pregnant, she gave birth prematurely. The baby died only a few hours later following a minor surgical procedure. She subsequently suffered from depression, which later resulted in chronic high blood pressure requiring lifelong medical treatment. September 2, 2024: First arbitrary arrest in Lomé, marking the beginning of an escalation in repression. Ongoing harassment: Beyond verbal threats, he was subjected to systematic surveillance, profiling, and constant monitoring intended to obstruct his activities. Faced with the imminent threat of another arrest and certain imprisonment, Rodrigue Ahégo was forced to flee Togo during the night of July 31, 2025. His departure did not put an end to the pressure. The very next day, intelligence agents visited his family home. Since then, his wife and children have been subjected to direct intimidation, particularly through phone calls, illustrating the State’s determination to target the defender through his relatives. After six months of wandering across the African continent, Rodrigue Ahégo’s situation has become critical: economic hardship (facing the high cost of living and a complete lack of means of subsistence, he struggles to meet his basic needs), and persistent insecurity (in a context of increasing security cooperation among certain African states, he faces risks of extradition and state-orchestrated plots; his physical safety on the continent can no longer be guaranteed).
